Coffee may be the fuel that keeps hospitals buzzing both day and night.

A new survey shows nurses and doctors — compared to other professions — depend most on the buzz of coffee to perform their best on the job.
But health professionals aren’t alone. Researchers found 43% of coffee drinkers say they’re less productive if they don’t drink coffee on the job. And about a third of workers say they need coffee just to get through the workday.
“Today’s workforce is working longer hours and shouldering heavier workloads,” says Richard Castellini, chief marketing officer at CareerBuilder, who commissioned the survey, along with Dunkin’ Donuts, in a news release. “The survey shows having an extra energy boost in the morning and throughout the day may be helping productivity levels.”
The nationwide survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, included more than 3,600 workers and rated the professions with the highest proportion of workers that said they were less productive without coffee.
Professions Most Dependent on Coffee
The results showed the professions most dependent on coffee were:
1. Nurses
2. Physicians
3. Hotel workers
4. Designers/architects
5. Financial/Insurance sales representatives
6. Food preparers
7. Engineers
8. Teachers
Marketing/Public relations professionals
- Scientists
- Machine operators
- Government workers
Researchers found workers in the Northeast were the most dependent on coffee, with 48% saying they were less productive without it compared with a low of 34% of workers in the Midwest that said the same.
Coffee Drinking Habits
Other findings of the survey include:
Younger workers more dependent on coffee. Forty percent of those aged 18 to 24 said they can’t concentrate as well without coffee and 43% aged 18 to 34 said they have lower energy if they don’t get their daily java jolt.
Coffee as reward. Nearly one in four younger workers said they buy coffee as a way to treat themselves for a job well done.
One cup isn’t enough. Thirty-seven percent of workers say they drink two or more cups of coffee during their normal workday.

Excellent post! Personally, I don’t drink coffee, but I do reward myself with an extra large Tim Horton’s tea that I rarely get a third of the way through during my busy work day (social worker/mental health clinician). But, I still love the ritual of having the time and energy to stop off and get one. :) Thank you so much for sharing
One pot in the morning, (caffeine) and one in the evening(decaf) I am a knife industry writer by night and a woodworker by day!
Great cutting balance!
I would have thought authors would be #1 consumers of coffee. Maybe we’re just not speaking up about it. Lol
I can see your point-of-view. But, an author drinking lots of coffee would do so under the pressure from writing about blood, trauma and or trouble. 😕☕…LOL! Thanks for your feedback bowmanauthor. Hope you’re enjoying the season.
Thanks, my coffee-sipping friend. My one vice is black, strong coffee. Lol
We will leave the suspense of consumption to ‘a mystery coffee drinker.’ Hehehe hehe…
A good breaking down. I am wonder why scientist is low on the list. Recently there was another report (I believe it is from UK) about drinking 3 caps a day can be good for you.
That is pretty odd that scientists are not #1 on this list (I would think they did more critical thinking than doctors). I am sure there are many coffee drinking statistics floating around. All good info. Thanks for commenting!
I have been stepping up on my coffee intake, I noticed, as my writing deadline approaches… *wry laugh*
Hmmmm…LOL !
Hmmmm…LOL ! I must be doing the. same…
I go through at least two cups at work, my first cup is always an extra large from DD which is always gone before my 9 am med pass is completed, then the second cup, medium. The rest of my work day is dependent on other forms of caffeine. Oh did I mention I am a nurse lol
A busy profession requiring all staff to be fully alert and coffee helps. Thanks for reading and commenting💕☕
I would not survive nursing without it. It quickly became my best friend in nursing school and we have remained great friends ever since 😂
LOL!
I like the positioning of designers and teachers on the list. I used to be a graphic designer and I’ve been a teacher since 2004.
One of the major changes that took place after I switched careers was that my desire for coffee dropped by about half. I used to down eight coffees a day when I was a graphic designer, these days I get by happily on three or four.
Awesome!
wow – who knew?? I will have to share this with the nurses I know
❤️❤️❤️
