Simply Red are a British soul and pop band which formed in 1983 in Manchester. The lead singer of the band was the singer and songwriter Mick Hucknall, who, by the time the band was disbanded in 2010, was the only original member left.
At the 1992 and 1993 Brit Awards, they received the award for Best British Group. They received three Grammy Awardnominations: for Best New Artist in 1987, and “Holding Back the Years” and “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals. The band re-formed in 2015. Simply Red have sold over 50 million records worldwide.
Undoubtedly, one of the best pop songs of that decade.
Agree. A decade full of creative energy and music talent, for sure. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
The vocal in this song really sells it – raw and heartfelt with a tinge of wistfulness.
Mick’s vocal is very unique and soulful. I love his emotional lyrics and his non-competing, complimentary music gives his voice the spotlight. The awards received for “Holding Back The Years”, is well deserved. Cheers!
Years ago, someone I used to work with in the music industry was fortunate to have attended a live performance during the height of Simply Red’s popularity and, I distinctly recall, he related that the singer’s performance was both flawless and transcendent.
Always a great performance! There’s something about the music of that entire era. Artists were booming with new creative sounds. Entertainment was tops, for sure!
Always one of my favorites. get to me sooner or later.
