Born in South Carolina but raised in Harlem, New York, Jeanette was a member of a group called the Hearts before making her first solo recording as Baby Washington in 1957, Her first hits came two years later when she entered the US R&B Chart with her own composition, “This Time”. Her first Hot-100 entry followed in 1961 when “Nobody Cares (About Me)” – another one of her own songs – crested at #60.
Jeanette joined Sue Records the following year and began a run of chart hits that continued through 1965. “That’s How Heartaches Are Made” was one of these; peaking at #40 in 1963. She revived her career in the early 70s, scoring an r&b hit with a revival of the Marvelettes’ “Forever” in a duet with Don Gardner. The Marvelettes had returned ““That’s How Heartaches Are Made” to their charts when their cover reached #97 in 1969.
Sue Records released an album titled after the hit in 1963 featuring this fabulous pic of Baby Washington on the front cover. The album was picked up by Decca’s London American label for release in the UK.
Another one of Ben Raleigh’s great songs too. Ben also co-wrote hits for Johnny Mathis, Lesley Gore and Ray Peterson and these are only a few in his extensive repertoire.
“That’s How Heartaches Are Made,” became one of the premier pop/soul ballads from the early 60s, sung with great feeling by Jeanette (Baby) Washington. wiki
